Proudest Biking Moment - Smashing over 30 minutes off his previous time in the "Gutbuster" a 50-mile off-road race, with over 5000ft of climbing, finishing in 3hrs, 44mins.

During ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND founder Andrew Fairfax's 2,700-mile cycling expedition from Istanbul to London in 2003, he thought, Why aren't we doing this at home? The result of that epiphany is the Weka, a 13-day supported bike trip circling the South Island. It hits all the top spots, like the majestic peaks and gushing waterfalls of Milford Sound and the blue ice of the Franz Josef Glacier, while staying off most of the main routes, worn thin by tourist traffic. You'll log roughly 400 miles on Specialized hybrids that can handle gravel farm paths and other classic Kiwi obstacles like cow dung and stubborn sheep.

Road and Trail riding – Mixed Terrain Cycling Tour

If you want an all round New Zealand biking experience then you might consider our mixed terrain trip – the Weka trip. We designed this 13-day trip to make the most of the roads and off-road trails of New Zealand. While the main roads aren’t very busy, the back country trails are even less so. Getting out there on your bike means you'll be amongst scenery that not very many people on the planet get to see and experience.

Mountain Biking in Queenstown

Queenstown is a mountain biking mecca and riders of any ability are spoilt for choice – from cruisy riverside and lakefront trails, to back country bush and mountain tracks, it’s all here. You'll have at least one free day in Queenstown on any of our South Island trips and you are guaranteed good riding, whether you choose to follow a gravel track up to and around scenic Moke Lake, race down a single track from the top of the gondola, or explore one of the many mountain biking tracks along the lakefront that are easily accessible from town. For a splurge, book a heli-biking tour and get dropped off at the top of a remote track by helicopter.
